Chardon Municipal Cemetery
Chardon Municipal Cemetery is a place of quiet reflection and deep historical significance, serving as the final resting place for generations of Chardon residents. Nestled within the heart of the City, the cemetery reflects the city's enduring respect for its past and the individuals who helped shape its community. With its mature trees, well-kept grounds, and peaceful atmosphere, the cemetery offers a dignified space for remembrance and connection to Chardon’s rich heritage.
Burial and interment in the cemetery’s columbarium are open to both residents and non-residents, ensuring that all who feel a connection to Chardon may find a place of lasting rest here.
Rules and Regulations
Conduct at the cemetery is governed by Chapter 941 of the City's Codified Ordinances. The following are some of the common rules and regulations most referenced.
General Rules
- The purchase or resale of graves, crypts, and niches must be made through the office of the Cemetery Clerk. This helps the City track who is entitled to be buried in what grave and ensure everyone is in their correct final resting place.
- Burials and interments are not permitted to occur on any holiday as observed by the City of Chardon.
- Family/friends of the deceased have one (1) year from the date of burial/internment to place a permanent grave marker. Trees, shrubs, fencing, hedges, curbing, enclosures, and above ground vaults or tombs are prohibited.
Decoration Guidelines
- No more than two decorations are permitted per grave. Glass objects or containers are prohibited. Any decorations and flowers not properly cared for and deemed unsightly, dead or wilted will be removed and disposed of by City staff.
- Flowers may be placed on graves adjacent to the headstone monument and should extend no more than twelve (12) inches from said monument.
- One Shepard’s staff per grave is permitted and must be placed directly next to the monument with the hook hanging over the appropriate grave. The Shepard’s staff will be counted as one of the two allowable decorations. Shepard’s staffs that have been identified as unused for more than 60 days will be removed by City staff.
- Annual Decoration Removal.Holiday, summer, and winter decoration must be removed annually in accordance with the below schedule. Any decoration not removed by the designated dates will be disposed of by City staff.
- Summer Decorations may be placed on or after April 15 and may remain through October 15. All summer decorations must be removed by October 15.
- Winter Decorations including but not limited to wreaths and crosses may be placed on or after November 15 and may remain through March 15. All winter decorations must be removed by March 15.
- Holiday Decorations May be placed up to one week before the holiday and must be removed within 48 hours after the holiday.
- Summer Decorations may be placed on or after April 15 and may remain through October 15. All summer decorations must be removed by October 15.
Charges and Fees
Cemetery charges and fees are set by Chardon City Council and can be found in Chapter 941 of the City's Codified Ordinances.
